Reinventing Childhood Lawn Chairs with Macrame

I didn’t want to toss out my trusty childhood lawn chairs just because they were falling apart. So, I found a way to reinvent them to last another three decades, and add some colorful charm, too.

When the pandemic hit and we started hanging out with friends exclusively outdoors, we found ourselves needing go-to chairs that we could take to parks, or friend’s backyards.

When most of our friends arrived with fancy camping chairs complete with cup holders and ergonomic seats, Ross and I showed up with these, which had been sitting in my mom’s garage since my childhood.

They were ripping at the seams and sagging pretty significantly when we sat in them.

While they were falling apart, I really liked the size of them. They were low to the ground but not too reclined. Perfectly casual and comfy for long outdoor hangouts. In fact, when I went shopping for replacement chairs, I was disappointed in all of the options that sat too high or leaned back too far.

So, instead of purchasing new chairs, I reinvented them.

I followed this tutorial from my friend Alison, and used this image as my color palette inspiration. Below are each of the colors I used. There are SO many different color options! I got one skein of each color for my two chairs and have some left over. You could definitely get away with buying less rope if you reduce your color palette a bit.

These are chairs I used as a kid, but they fit my adult human body, so I revamped them for me and Ross. But, Margot likes them too, so she’s put in more hours sitting in them than we have.

Psst: I keep saying "chairs” plural, but while I have two of them, I only finished one. Stay tuned for me to do that one next! I’m planning on inverting the colors a bit, I hope I like it!
