How We Turned a Garage into a Living Room, Laundry Room, Office, and Storage Space
/My friend Martha had a vision for this garage conversion: to turn her unfinished catch-all garage into a beautiful, hard-working space that could function as a living room, media room, playroom, laundry room, home office, and storage zone. I’ll be honest, I wasn’t entirely convinced all of that could fit. But somehow(?!), it absolutely does and it turned out even better than I imagined.
This post is in partnership with iCabinetry who I was excited to work with again after such a great experience on my friend’s kitchen project. Their cabinetry selection is unparalleled (they even have inset)!
iCabinetry is that sweet spot between stock and fully custom. More flexibility than stock cabinets and none of the lead times or sticker shock of custom. Plus, they arrive pre-assembled and you get a pro designer included (two must haves when doing a project like this, IMO).
Their focus may be kitchens, but spoiler: cabinets can completely transform utility spaces too. When you reach out to iCabinetry Direct, mention code GOLD60 for 60% off your cabinets in 2026! This code applies to the semi-custom line seen in this post, but GOLD35 gets you 35% off inset cabinets! The code is good July 1 through September 30 and then again December 1 through December 30.

Martha and Danny’s garage was never used for parking cars. It had long been doing double duty as storage and laundry, but not especially well.
And that’s what made this garage conversion so genuinely satisfying. The goal wasn’t just to make it prettier. It was to make it more functional.
Here’s what they wanted the space to do:
Play!
Martha and Danny have one of those dream neighborhood setups where the kids play outside together, families gather in the driveway, and they have frequent block parties. They wanted the garage conversion to support that rhythm of life with more room to gather and storage for all the play-things.
goal: storage for board games and toys, a projector/tv, flexible seating, a drink fridge, a kids’ art station, and easy access to outdoor toys
Work!
They needed a home office. Not a giant one, just a dedicated place to sit down, focus, and take calls without interrupting the rest of the house.
goal: a desk, file storage, and a door for quiet work phone calls
Store!
With the big renovations behind them, it was time to retire the DIY tools (mostly) and reclaim the space for the not-so-pretty but very-real stuff like bulk paper goods, cat food, seasonal décor, and gym gear.
goal: closed storage, a solution for all the bikes, and room for workout equipment
Wash!
Their laundry setup technically worked, but could be much smarter.
goal: stack the washer and dryer, hide cleaning supplies, upgrade the sink, and enclose the area.
When Martha laid out this wishlist, my first response was, "Oh… so you want to add on?" I’m still surprised what they’re able to fit within the existing footprint!
Their garage is a pretty typical two-car garage for our area. It opens up into a driveway, has access to their side yard, and connects directly to the kitchen. You can see a video of the space here (or below).
Disclaimer: Building codes and garage conversion rules vary by region, so research what applies where you live. This project has plenty of egress, includes no bedrooms, and the family isn’t parking cars inside.

Here’s how we made their wishlist fit into the same footprint:
Laundry Room + Home Office
We added two walls to enclose one corner of the garage, creating a dedicated laundry room and home office. A new window above the desk overlooks the garden and makes the little room feel surprisingly lovely. A pocket door at the entrance means the office can close for work calls (or to fold laundry in privacy).
iCabinetry cabinets support the new sink and conceal the laundry and cleaning supplies, which instantly makes the room feel calmer and more intentional. Martha chose iCabinetry’s Value Semi Custom line in the color Retreat, paired with these cabinet cabinet pulls. That cool terrazzo countertop makes the mundane task of laundry seem more, dare I say, enjoyable?
On the other wall is office storage in soft-close drawers and a drink fridge. iCabinetry cabinets arrived pre-assembled, with doors and drawers already installed and adjusted before shipping. The contractor flew through installation compared to flat-pack or waiting on a custom cabinet maker. Even a confident DIYer could follow the installation guide with great success.
This corner of the garage is only 10.5' x 7.5', but it now works so much harder than it ever did before.
Kids’ Craft Area
Just outside the door to the office and laundry room is a craft zone for the kiddos. The drawing table and rolling cart give them a place to get creative, and the wall is painted with magnetic paint beneath a layer of white paint so the artists can hang their pieces with magnets easily.
Living Room Storage + Bookcase Wall
On the other side of the new wall, we added a bookcase for their growing collection of books and treasures. Below the open shelving is closed storage for board games, toys, and play gear. These bookcases and cabinets are also from iCabinetry, this time in a Maple finish from the same Value Semi Custom line.
We went to iCabinetry with a loose idea, "can this wall feel like custom built-ins?" and their included designer took it from vague concept to a precise plan: the right cabinet sizes, shelf proportions, fillers, toe kicks, all of it. I find cabinet layout genuinely enjoyable, but despise doing the math for filler pieces so thank goodness for the one-on-one designer.
The lower cabinets wrap around the corner for even more toy storage, while a new window above them floods the room with light and helps the whole space read as a living room rather than a garage. And when they want movie night, a screen pulls down over the window, the ceiling-mounted projector turns on, and the room transforms into a little theater. What can’t this room do?!
The L-shaped bookcases surround a couch and chairs to create a perfectly cozy living room. For curious minds, the bookcase wall is 7.5’ and the wall with the window is 13’.
Gear Storage
Martha traded open shelving and plastic bins for iCabinetry’s Semi Custom cabinets cabinets in the color Retreat. After paring down what they no longer needed, they organized their bulk storage and recreation gear into three 36" wide cabinets.
The closed storage keeps the space looking tidier, but this is still real life - not everything needs to fit in a built-in cabinet! We left room around the new cabinets for tool boxes, the EV car charger, a ceiling-mounted bike rack, rolling toys, and a spot for bulky suitcases on top.
iCabinetry offers lots of configurable storage options, but Martha intentionally kept the interiors simple with adjustable shelving so the storage can shift over time as their needs change.
This project is a good reminder that cabinetry isn’t just for kitchens. In utility space like this, it makes a former garage feel more like a true extension of the home.
The best part of this garage conversion is how it connects families on the block! With the push of a door opener and pulling toys from the cabinet, the driveway and garage becomes THE place to hang out after school with neighborhood friends.
